Description
Rain was in the forecast for Aranjuez Spain but since the sun was temporarily shining, I made a visit to Prince’s Garden, the largest of the city’s historic and traditional gardens. One of the highlights of the park is the Estanque de los Chinescos, or Chinese Pond. The dappled sunlight was falling across the pond in such a way as to create a small rainbow through the fountain. When the park was designed between 1772 and 1804, having a pool with Chinese pavilion was an essential in the landscape designers’ repertoire! However, the original Chinese temple was severely damaged shortly afterwards in the War of Spanish Independence and rebuilt by Ferdinand VII as a kiosk of Turkish style (shown here), with bright red and gold. The perimeter of this sprawling garden is about seven km (which I can attest to) and the whole area is about 150 hectares.
