It was established in 1686 as an open public space by New Yorks colonial Gavernor Thomas Dongan. It was named Bryant Park in 1884 to honor New York Evening Post editor William Cullen Bryant. The New Your City Public Library bounds the Parks eastern edge. Below Bryant Park resides the New York City Librarys archives.
