Description
Count Basie was a legendary jazz pianist bandleader and composer born in 1904 in Red Bank New Jersey. The Count brought many innovations to the music he is associated with and personalities he mentored. The town of Red Bank has honored the legacy of Count Basie by bestowing the honorary name of Count Basie Way to Mechanic Street, where he was born, in town. In addition the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank that opened in 1926 was renamed Count Basie Theater in 1984 as a continuing tribute to the Count’s contribution to music and performance. This venue has hosted famous personalities such as James Brown, Tony Bennett and George Carlin and continues to serve as a vibrant setting for performers throughout the year.
The image displayed here is a view of the theater entrance prior a performance in January 2015. An extraction from the honorary street sign is superimposed in the foreground of the theater entrance.
