Description
Spirit of 1776 was copied after Archibald Willard painting of Yankee Doodle which now hangs in Abbot Hall, a town hall and historical museum in Marblehead Massachusetts.
Willards painting was made in 1875 and the image is now in the public domain. As you can see if you could compare a photo of Willards painting to Jan Mecklenburgs painting that Jans painting is a bit more colorful and more active looking.
It is said that Willard used his dad as a model for the gray haired drummer. Archibald Willards painting was originally was exhibited at a Centennial Exhibition. Because the painting was such a success at the exhibition Willard painted others which were then exhibited around the country.
