Description
Jean Leon Gerome Ferris painted the picture used for reference to make this picture. Ferris picture was painted in 1889. Although his painting is criticized for showing the Wampanoag Native Americans dressed in the style from the Great Plains, it does show the spirit of the feast. Other paintings of the event are faulted for the black pilgrim costumes with buckles saying that buckles were for the wealthy and also the dress was not all black and white.
The First Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 by 53 Pilgrims, all who remained of the 100 who had landed in the new world of America. It was a feast of Thanksgiving for their their first harvest in the New World. Ninety Native Americans attended as guests. Four Pilgrim women cooked the meal. Similar early winter feasts continued in later years and later the celebration became a tradition.
The First National Proclamation of Thanksgiving was given by the Continental Congress in 1777. Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens, to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November.
