Description
This painting offers an overview of Mission San Juan Capistrano from near the visitors entrance. The colors are full spectrum---even throughout the sky with its greens and blues, pinks and yellows.
In order to add the deserved drama to the old, historic and respected mission, I added a deserving sky. It is intended to reflect the ocean fog that often rolls in from the seashore that is just a few miles away. There is a heart in the sky but I didn't know I was painting it at the time. Can you find it?
This painting also is intended to show the phenomenal light that makes colors sing at this longitude. Because here in California, though not rich with trees like the Northwest or Alaska, or not blessed with distinct seasons like much of the U.S., the clarity and joy of color is constant.
Natural sunlight creates objects that are richer in color. For the Artist it is a treat to really observe the beauty of dimension that color can offer. This all can be likened to looking at color in a room at night or on a foggy day and then observing it again on a sunny day.
Notice the color of the palms. Each is reflecting the sun, the shade on the frond, or the color of the palm itself. In this painting the Hollyhock and geraniums and daisies and any number of other flowers contribute to the California story of color.
The painting shows the two cement sofas that line the forward walk and a fountain that sits half way between the viewer and the ruins. The Old Chapel with its cross has an arched walkway. The bell wall is behind the tree. But if you want a perfect overview of the entire mission----come visit. You will find the few hours you spend there to be an inspiration over and over.
